In 1998 Hurricane
Mitch hit Nicaragua. The
torrential downpour caused the side of a crater lake to fail sending a
massive wave of mud down the mountain completely destroying communities
in a 50 mile area. The
surviving members of one of these communities were relocated to the
community of Chichigalpa.
These people literally had nothing but their lives to begin their lives
anew.
When the school year began the next year, the parents asked the
government to provide a school for their children.
For one year a school was sponsored by the government rotating
among the houses of the people.
In 2000, the government withdrew its support and the church
decided to continue it – and thus was born Bethel school.
Bethel is now a full high school known for its academic excellence in
the area having won various academic awards.
Its official title includes the Spanish word for technical school
although they currently do not offer technical classes.
When people ask the director why it is part of the name, he says
it is declaring in faith that one day they will be able to train
students for careers. Bethel
is a school with a mission and a vision for the future – and they know
that the future relies on a Godly generation of young people!
